Doing our bit for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot
Once common across Victoria’s volcanic plains and grasslands, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii) is now one of Victoria’s most endangered species and considered extinct in Victoria’s wild.
The survival of these shy tussock-dwellers now depends entirely on captive breeding programs and secure, healthy, predator-free habitat.
As part of a Wild Futures Program, numerous not for profit and government agencies are working to create secure areas where these bandicoots can flourish in their native grassland habitat. Minibeasts Enterprises donates all live food to the Serendip wildlife sanctuary (http://www.conservationvolunteers.com.au/support-us/wild-futures/eastern-barred-bandicoot) which has helped to expand the program and establish a breeding colony. We will continue to donate food as required to help towards securing a lasting future for these amazing little marsupials.
